The IMR Wolbachia Laboratory

The Institute for Medical Research, the research arm under the Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH) working with international partners led by the University of Glasgow, Scotland is undertaking an exciting initiative that will test a new bio-control method to stop the growing threat of diseases transmitted by mosquitoes. The MOH is continuously giving a tireless effort on the national priority areas under the scope of burden of diseases which includes the tropical diseases. This is an intervention program to curb mosquito borne diseases such as dengue, Zika and chikungunya.

In Malaysia, the research on Wolbachia has started since 2012 by scientists in the Institute for Medical Research (IMR). Now, we have move a step ahead for a 5-years duration project that utilizes this promising Wolbachia based Aedes control strategy by collaborating with the international collaborators. This project is fully funded by the Wellcome trust, UK.
