Abstract :

The study is designed to investigate the potential of curcumin as drug sensitizer and metastatic inhibitor on specific chemo-resistance lung cancer stem cell (CSC) population. Putative CSCs (CD166+/CD326+) isolated from A549 (Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer / NSCLC) cancer cell line were cultured and maintained in RPMI 1640 complete medium throughout the study period. Our finding showed that treatment of curcumin together with cisplatin enhanced apoptosis level of putative CSCs up to ~40% compared to cisplatin treatment alone. Moreover, we noticed that combination of curcumin and cisplatin significantly suppressed the migration of putative CSCs with only ~10% of cells migrated as compared to cisplatin treatment alone (~40%). As a conclusion, we believe that curcumin may enhance the effects of cisplatin on eliminating putative CSCs specific for NSCLC and thus could possibly prevent lung cancer metastasis and recurrence.
