Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Parasitology and Entomology (DAP & E) Course

Next Intake: Tentatively 15 April 2025 – 26 October 2025

Introduction

The Postgraduate DAP&E was initiated in Institute for Medical Research (IMR), Malaysia in 1970. Yearly, the Postgraduate DAP&E is conducted for a duration of 6 months. For 2025, the course will be conducted on 15 April 2025 until 26 October 2025.

The course was designated to train medical doctors, scientists, researchers and other health personnels in basic and advance Parasitology and Entomology, as well as skills in conducting research, diagnostic services and approaches in control programmes.

The aim of the course generally is to provide knowledge and practical training on pathogens of major significance to public health and to enable participants to apply scientific approach and critical thinking to diagnose, prevent and control infectious diseases. The course will facilitate and strengthen institutional and national capabilities in medical diagnostic laboratory services, research and human resource development. It is also hoped that this course will encourage networking between the various participants’ institutions and ours to foster exchange in expertise and collaboration in research projects.

For the session 2025/2026, the Dean of Postgraduate DAP&E is Dr Noor Azian bin Md Yusuf, from Parasitology Unit, IMR and the Deputy Dean of Postgraduate DAP&E is Dr Nurulhusna Ab Hamid, from the Medical Entomology, IMR. 

Objective:

The objective of the course generally is to provide an overview of the major parasitic diseases of man and their vectors.  The training provided would enable the participants to:

  • Understand, interpret and apply the basic epidemiological and statistical methods, haematology, immunology and molecular biology.
  • Understanding of the biology and the life cycles of the major parasites and of their vectors or/and intermediate hosts.
  • Identify (diagnosis) of the major parasites, vectors and intermediate hosts of some parasitic diseases using basic and molecular approaches.
  • Understanding the pathogenesis and pathology of the major parasitic diseases and the immune responses to these parasites.
  • Appreciate the epidemiology of the major parasitic infections.
  • Appreciate methods available for chemotherapy and control of the parasitic diseases.
  • Comprehend methods used in the studying of medical entomology in the laboratory and in the field
  • Enable to conduct own research projects.

Course Venue

The course will be held at the SEAMEO-TROPMED Regional Centre for Microbiology, Parasitology & Entomology, Institute for Medical Research (IMR), National Institutes of Health, Setia Alam, 40170 Shah Alam, Selangor Malaysia.

Course Methodology:

The course includes :

  • Lectures, demonstrations, hands-on laboratory sessions, field trips, and study visits.
  • Short research projects.
  • Post-module assessments and a final examination consisting of both theory and practical evaluations.

  4. Haematology and Immunology
  5. Molecular biology

Course Fee:

The full course fee is RM18,500.00 (exclusive of food and accommodation). The fee must be paid in advance prior to the commencement of the course.

The Institute will provide hostel rooms with basic facilities and bathrooms at the NIH Residency in Setia Alam, Selangor, Malaysia. (Currently, there is no accommodation charge, as the Ministry of Health is still negotiating the rates. Terms and conditions applied).
