The Molecular Diagnostics (UMD) Unit serves as a national referral centre for inborn errors of metabolism (IEM) and other inherited genetic diseases in Malaysia since 2003.
This laboratory has granted an MS ISO 15189 accreditation for Molecular Genetics testing since 2016. To date, there is more than 100 genetic testing being offered. Other than specialized diagnostics testing, UMD also performs research on rare genetic diseases.
The laboratory is well-equipped with advanced instruments such as automated DNA extraction system, PCR, qPCR, automated electrophoresis system, DNA Sequencer and Next Generation Sequencing to strengthen the research involving the discovery of new disease biomarkers and also the development of new laboratory methods for highly specialised tests to support genetic services in Malaysia.
