Cardiovascular Unit

The Cardiovascular Unit is dedicated to advancing the understanding and prevention of heart disease, one of Malaysia’s leading health burdens. The unit focuses on uncovering how genetics, lifestyle, and biological factors interact to influence cardiovascular health, with particular emphasis on coronary heart disease (CHD) and inherited cardiac conditions such as Brugada syndrome.

As the custodian of the MAVERIK study, a large case–control study involving 5,047 participants, the unit continues to oversee its data to support ongoing cardiovascular discovery.

The unit also brings extensive expertise in multi-centre recruitment, ensuring high-quality data collection and representation from diverse populations across Malaysia. Through these efforts, our research focuses on biomarker discovery, risk stratification, and genetic determinants to improve early detection and develop personalised prevention and treatment strategies.

Collaboration is central to our mission, working closely with clinicians, scientists, and international partners, the unit strives to translate research discoveries into meaningful improvements in cardiovascular health and contribute to Malaysia’s growing capacity in precision medicine.
