The Specimen Management Information System (SMIS) is an in-house web-based database developed by the Institute for Medical Research (IMR), Malaysia, under the Specimen Management Unit (UPS). Introduced in 2017, SMIS streamlines the management of biological specimens from collection to testing, ensuring proper tracking, labelling, storage, and traceability. The system has been enhanced to include laboratory test result modules, enabling hospitals to access diagnostic results online. Recognized as an innovation by the Ministry of Health and an award recipient in 2021, SMIS plays a crucial role in improving efficiency, data integrity, and transparency in diagnostic services—supporting IMR’s mission to uphold excellence in biomedical research and public health diagnostics.
