TRAINING

Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Parasitology and Entomology (DAP & E)

Introduction

The Postgraduate DAPE was initiated in Institute for Medical Research (IMR), Malaysia in 1970. Yearly, the Postgraduate DAPE is conducted for a duration of 6 months.

The 2026 session is scheduled to be conducted from 6 April 2026 to 18 October 2026.

The course was designated to train medical doctors, scientists, researchers and other health personnels in basic and advance Parasitology and Entomology, as well as skills in conducting research, diagnostic services and approaches in control programmes.

The aim of the course generally is to provide knowledge and practical training on pathogens of major significance to public health and to enable participants to apply scientific approach and critical thinking to diagnose, prevent and control infectious diseases. The course will facilitate and strengthen institutional and national capabilities in medical diagnostic laboratory services, research and human resource development. It is also hoped that this course will encourage networking between the various participants’ institutions and ours to foster exchange in expertise and collaboration in research projects.

For the 2025/2026 session, the course will be led by:

  • Dean: Dr Noor Azian bin Md Yusuf, from the Parasitology Unit, IMR
  • Deputy Dean: Dr Nurulhusna Ab Hamid, from the Medical Entomology, IMR

Course Objectives

The objective of the course generally is to provide an overview of the major parasitic diseases of man and their vectors.  The training provided would enable the participants to:

  1. Understand, interpret and apply the basic epidemiological and statistical methods, haematology, immunology and molecular biology.
  2. Understanding of the biology and the life cycles of the major parasites and of their vectors or/and intermediate hosts.
  3. Identify (diagnosis) of the major parasites, vectors and intermediate hosts of some parasitic diseases using basic and molecular approaches.
  4. Understanding the pathogenesis and pathology of the major parasitic diseases and the immune responses to these parasites.
  5. Appreciate the epidemiology of the major parasitic infections.
  6. Appreciate methods available for chemotherapy and control of the parasitic diseases.
  7. Comprehend methods used in the studying of medical entomology in the laboratory and in the field
  8. Enable to conduct own research projects.

The postgraduate DAPE course comprises 16 comprehensive modules, each designed to provide in-depth knowledge and practical skills in various key areas of parasitology & entomology:
