Entomology Unit
Entomology Unit
The Entomology Unit of the Infectious Disease Research Centre (IDRC) at the Institute for Medical Research (IMR), Malaysia, plays an important role in studying insect vectors that transmit infectious diseases. Its activities primarily focus on vector research, surveillance, and control, particularly for mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue and malaria. The unit conducts studies on the bionomics (biology and behaviour) of disease vectors, including species such as Aedes and Anopheles, to better understand their breeding habits, ecology, and transmission dynamics. These investigations support the development of effective strategies for monitoring vector populations and implementing targeted vector control measures.
In addition, the unit carries out entomological surveillance and applied research to evaluate new vector control approaches, including innovative technologies and integrated vector management strategies. This includes assessing the effectiveness of interventions such as novel trapping systems, insecticide applications, and other methods aimed at reducing vector populations and disease transmission. Through these activities, the Entomology Unit contributes scientific evidence and technical expertise to support national public health programs for the prevention and control of vector-borne diseases in Malaysia.
