Immunogenetic Unit

The Immunogenetics Unit established in 2016 with focus on multidisciplinary research in immunology and genetics. Our work investigates how genetic, environmental, and immune factors influence disease susceptibility, clinical outcomes, and treatment response. We study autoimmune and chronic inflammatory diseases (e.g., rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, spondyloarthropathies), renal immune-mediated disorders (e.g., Immunoglobulin A nephropathy, lupus nephritis), and host susceptibility to infectious diseases (e.g., dengue, chikungunya). We also focus on the genetic basis of drug hypersensitivity, including allopurinol and dapsone-induced severe cutaneous adverse reactions (SCARs), as well as reactions to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), neuromuscular blocking agent (NMBA), and penicillin and antibiotics.

The Immunogenetic Unit employs genomic testing, encompassing high-resolution HLA typing, Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) genotyping, and population analyses, to investigate gene–environment and gene–protein interactions within Malaysia's major ethnic Our research integrates genomic, molecular, immunological, and bioinformatics approaches/ methodologies with the objective of identifying predictive biomarkers, improving early risk assessment, and ultimately enhancing patient care and reducing the burden of disease in Malaysia.
