Nutrition Unit
Nutrition Unit
The Nutrition Unit undertakes extensive research integrating biochemical, molecular, and omics methodologies, complemented by in-vitro and in-vivo preclinical investigations. Our focus is centred on nutritional biochemistry, nutrigenomics, and analytical food chemistry, primarily to address paramount national health priorities.
Key research initiatives encompass the examination of functional foods, including but not limited to seaweed, honey, bird nests, and seafood, to ascertain their prospective roles in the prevention and treatment of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs). The unit also maintains and updates the national Food Composition Database (MyFCD) for Malaysia through rigorous food analysis protocols. We are also dedicated to the development of novel biomarker detection methods, such as innovative "sensor" techniques for the precise measurement of vitamin D.
The unit provides expert advice to governmental bodies and relevant stakeholders concerning food legislation, official dietary guidelines, and comprehensive nutritional data. In addition, the Nutrition Unit significantly contributes to national health interventions, notably the National Iodine Deficiency Disorders Eradication Programme, wherein it serves as a supplier of requisite iodine test kits and functions as a designated reference laboratory.
The unit actively fosters collaborative partnerships with both academic institutions and industry entities for research and development endeavours, with the ultimate objective of effectively translating nutrition research into tangible public health benefits for the populace of Malaysia.
