Stomatology Unit

Stomatology Unit
The Stomatology Unit was established on 3 April 1967 and later restructured under the Cancer Research Centre (CaRC) in April 2001. Accredited with MS ISO 15189 since 2023, the laboratory houses the nation’s largest collection of oral biopsy specimens and remains the sole standalone Oral Pathology diagnostic laboratory under the Ministry of Health Malaysia.
The unit provides oral diagnostic histopathology and consultation services, primarily through microscopic examination of specimens from the oral cavity, jaws, and associated structures for the diagnosis of inflammatory, infectious, cystic, benign, and malignant lesions. It routinely manages cases involving oral potentially malignant disorders, oral squamous cell carcinoma, odontogenic tumours, salivary gland diseases, and other oral pathologies.
Beyond diagnostics, the unit conducts biomedical research on oral diseases, focusing on clinicopathological correlations and biomarkers in oral cancer, odontogenic and salivary gland tumours. Due to the diversity of cases it receives, the unit is recognized as an attachment centre for postgraduate programmes in Oral Pathology and Oral Medicine. Through its integrated diagnostic, research, consultative, and training activities, the Stomatology Unit continues to strengthen national capacity in oral pathology and oral cancer research, advancing efforts to improve oral health and patient care in Malaysia.
